Todd was a great naturalist, dedicated to caring for and teaching about Maplewood's diverse trees. He worked for the Maplewood Parks and Shade Tree Division for 18 years, eventually becoming the Town Arborist. During that time and beyond he also maintained the trees of many grateful residents.
The Durand-Hedden House and Garden was particularly fortunate because following Todd's retirement in 2012 he devoted much of the next six years to "making Grasmere Park (the grounds around the historic Durand-Hedden House) shine": carefully planting and pruning trees and shrubs, removing errant ivy and weeds, clearing the stream after storms, and inoculating the elm at the top of the meadow.
He also created two successive versions of an illustrated brochure, which Durand-Hedden printed and distributed, highlighting Maplewood's notable trees, which he so loved.
